Looks like there’s an online petition to get H.P. Lovecraft’s At The Mountains of Madness made into a movie. I’m currently reading the story, and working on a Lovecraft inspired project, so this caught my interest when I read it on BleedingCool.com. I’ve tried reading At the Mountains of Madness a couple times before, but never finished it. It would always make me fall asleep. I’m not saying it’s a bad story. It’s not. I just can’t seem to stay awake while reading it. For the past week I’ve been having problems getting, and staying, asleep, so Sunday I picked up a set of set of Lovecraft’s stories to read at night. I’m just at the part where they discover Lake’s camp has been destroyed. It really is a decent story (I think it’s the pacing or some thing about it that keeps knocking me out… I dunno…), and I would really like to see it made into a movie. Especially if Guillermo Del Toro is at the helm. I think he would do a great job bringing it to life. Anyhow, here’s what the petition says:
Dear Universal Studios,
“At The Mountains of Madness” scares you. You fear the risk in funding such a movie. You fear the film will not bring in enough profit, when in fact a fresh film like this is exactly what the industry needs. This film will take the horror genre to new places. This is your chance to be credited as a modern day pioneer studio. This is your chance to be the studio willing to take the risk and make something original in a time of uninspired remakes and reboots. Fearing the outcome of a risky venture is understandable, but risks are unavoidable. This petition should ease your fears of the outcome somewhat, as everyone signing it is doing so as a promise to see this movie in theaters. Yes, we are asking you to take us on our word. We want to show you just how much this movie is needed. We want you to make “At The Mountains of Madness”. We want it to scare us.
Okay, I’m on board with this. I even wrote my own little comment to submit. I had to go into angry old man mode though. I figure that’s the best way to write a note to someone. Here’s what I said:
Just make the goddamn movie already! Tired of all these remakes and sequels of sequels and movies based on toys and rides and 3D bullshit! Do something worthwhile for once! Cost over eleven bucks to see a movie now days! Think I’ll drop that kind of cash to see any crap you plop down in front of us?! NO! Except Rango was kind of cool. That was worth the eleven bucks… but everything else is CRAP! I’m tired… ‘need to find my pants. Where’d I leave my pants?! I think they’re in the other room…
I think they’ll get the point. So, if you want, go ahead an sign the petition. Maybe it will actually get us a movie we want to see. By the way, the illustration above was done by DeviantArt user deankuhta. He’s a damn good illustrators, and worth a look. He’s also got a website for you to check out. Okay, now I’m off to find my pants.
