As many of you may already know, artist Ralph McQuarrie passed away today. It was Mr. McQuarrie’s amazing art work that established the look and feel for much of what we would later see in the Star Wars films. Years before Star Wars was produced, George Lucas commissioned Mr. McQuarrie to illustrate Lucas’s initial ideas for the space saga so that producers could have a chance to see what it was that Lucas wanted to make. McQuarrie also created paintings for The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi, Battlestar Galactica, Indiana Jones, and several other famous films. Mr. McQuirre was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease several years ago and had spent his last years in retirement.

Both Chudd and I are fans of Star Wars and great geek art. Since our teen years (and we got a hold of the first Star Wars RPG by West End Games where much of his art was used) the art of Ralph McQuarrie has inspired and encouraged our imaginations. Ralph McQuarrie was 82 when he died.
