So, Sam and Dean Winchester are paranormal hunters. No, not the “this spot of the room is a little cold, let’s shake the DV cam s’more in the night-vision mode” paranormal hunters. Sam and Dean hunt people hungry monsters hidden in the scariest parts of North America. This time around these fictional characters (based on the CW’s hit show of the same name) are tracking a hiker hungry windigo way up in the frigid Sierra Nevada mountains! Published through Titan Books; and written by author Alice Henderson’s; this new novel takes place sometime around season seven.
I’ve never seen the actual television show. Henderson’s book is my first experience to the world of Supernatural, and (despite a few things) I enjoyed her story. I think stories like Supernatural actually work better as novels. I feel that as readers we get more time with the story and our own imaginations allow us to see things the T.V. just can’t do (even with a budget for CGI). Though, there were several throw backs to the actual television show, I felt Henderson did a good job of explaining and incorporating those moments into the story.
However I do have some questions, like; How the hell do these guys pay for all this!? Was their dad loaded? Is “monster hunter” a career path my douche bag guidance counselor forgot to tell me about back in high-school? These guys cruise around in a fairly nice Impala and live out of hotels. Who’s cutting them a pay check each week? Jesus? Also, Does Mrs. Henderson know what it is like to be hit in the head? Maybe it’s not her fault (TV does this all the time too), but in this book the two brothers receive a series of beatings most MMA guys wouldn’t walk away from, and they still just get up and go hiking, like it’s no big deal! WTF? At one point one of the brothers (Sam) takes a 2×4 to the back of the head. I’ve been hit in the head a few times. Once with a board (though I don’t remember the cut) and whether getting hit in the head is by an angry asshole throwing punches, or by my own spastic like clumsiness, it really (REALLY) hurts! When it happens the last thing in the world I want to do is go hiking! I certainly wouldn’t fight an angry group of vampires afterwards. Okay, so I guess I can accept the guys fighting vampires and other monsters, but not shrugging off a few bruises from a fight. My bad, but other than those small complaints, I really did enjoy the book and would recommend it for any light/ leisure reading you may have.

Y’know I actually have a dent in my forehead from getting hit in the head. And that was from my own mother throwing something at me! It knocked me out cold and after getting up I sure as hell didn’t go punch a vampire. Actually, I don’t remember much from that day…
