An Atomic Moo Comic Book Review!
I love that new graphic novel smell. Okay, its weird, and yeah a neighbor did catch me taking a hefty sniff of the package left of my a door step last week, but life is short and a new book just has a great smell! Sometimes a man just has to take a moment and savor a good book whiff. Don’t judge. I pay my taxes and open doors for old ladies. If I want to sniff my new books, then I’m a damn well gonna smell the hell out of them!
The delightfully aromatic graphic novel I’m talking about this time, comes to us from writer and artist Kensuke Okabayashi who recently (successfully) funded his new graphic novel, The Foreigner: Book One! This 170 + page, full color, graphic novel isn’t just a fun smell, it’s a good read too! Created, written, and illustrated, by Okabayashi, The Foreigner: Book One is the story of a man named Kaz, who is mysteriously transported to the world of Ravenika when he tried to save his kidnapped wife. Here’s the proper synopsis:
This is a tale about Ravenika, a war-torn world ripped apart by three powerful brother kings and their queens battling for each other’s share of land and riches.
Not one of them would have expected that Kaz, a bewildered human who was mysteriously transported to Ravenika while attempting to save his kidnapped wife, would be the one to forge peace among them. For Kaz in particular, the stakes are high:
Restoring peace to Ravenika is his only way home.
I actually had already read this book when it was still a Kickstarter way back in 2016 (ancient times), but that was a digital version and you can read the review here. Now that I have a physical version, the experience is much better, and not just for the smell! Though… it helps. The book itself highlights Okabayashi’s very clean and bold art style, and his clear sense for design. Though self published, this graphic novel is easily on par with works being put out by Image or IDW, and I love their book designs. Also, as much as I love it when an artist sends a digital copy, physical books are just sooooo much better to read. Maybe I’m a very old nerd, but for me, nothing is better than some alone time with a good physical book.
I don’t want to spoil any of the book, but I did post the first six pages of the graphic novel below. However; the book is now for sale and soft cover copies are only $24.99! So, click this link, and go get your own copy! Support an indie artist! Let’s take the wind out the sails of shit box comic companies like Marvel! Also, keep checking back. The Foreigner: Book Two kickstarter should be out sometime this fall. We’ll let you know how that one smells too.
