An Atomic Moo Book Review
I love that “new art book” smell. I don’t know what makes it, but goddammit(!) – it’s great to pull that shrink wrap off of a new coffee table art book then take a good, healthy, whiff. Just snort it in! New art book smell is easily in my top ten of all time favorite smells. Probably somewhere between “cold day fire place wood burn smell” and “early morning bread shop smell.” Okay, so fantastic smell aside, I did actually take a look at the latest “art of” book from Titan Books, and for the most part I enjoyed every lush, aromatic, page.
Created by Paul Davies, and Martin Dubeau, Shadow of the Tomb Raider: Official Art Book (Titan Books: 2018) is a 192 page, hardback, full color book that showcases all the wonderful art and design behind the making of the video game. Which is also the last game in the Lara Croft origin series. Here’s a brief synopsis:
Experience Lara Croft’s defining moment as she becomes the Tomb Raider. In Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Lara must master a deadly jungle, overcome terrifying tombs, and persevere through her darkest hour. As she races to save the world from a Maya apocalypse, Lara will ultimately be forged into the Tomb Raider she is destined to be. The Shadow of The Tomb Raider Official Art Book features exclusive concept art and developer interviews detailing the climactic conclusion of Lara Croft’s origin story where she will experience her defining moment in becoming the Tomb Raider.
Overall, I thought this was a fantastic art book that shows off the incredible artistic talent that went into making the game. I especially enjoyed some of the ancient “mesoamerican” styled costumes created for the characters in the game. Oh, and the book smells wonderful. Seriously, get your nose in there.
I don’t have much to criticize in this book. Well… nothing that doesn’t criticize our entire current society and on a second thought this isn’t the place for those rants. So, my only real criticism of the actual book is that it does spoil a lot of the game’s story. I think Tomb Raider fans will dig this art book, but if you want to avoid spoilers, pick it up post play.
You can get your own copy of Shadow of the Tomb Raider: Official Art Book at the Titan Books online store or at your local bookstore! I’ve posted a few sample images below taken from my iPhone on my very own actual coffee table. I don’t drink coffee, but I own a coffee table. This is a weird new world. Oh, and I also included the official trailer for the game!
