Good evening El Moochadores! The following story has been all over the web today, but I figured that since we’re a website about independent creative endeavours (“geek creative”) that it would be worth a mention here. Plus we meet the Axanar crew at almost every So. Cal con we go to, and they’re a pretty cool bunch.

Earlier today, the Hollywood Reporter posted the news that Paramount Studios and CBS are suing the producers of the crowd funded fan film, Star Trek: Axanaraxnarcast2 for “a violation of their intellectual property“. According to the Hollywood Reporter, “The Axanar Works infringe Plaintiffs’ works by using innumerable copyrighted elements of Star Trek, including its settings, characters, species, and themes…“.

Produced by Alec Peters, the Axanar film project has earned over 1 million dollars through crowd source funding on sites like Kickstarter and indiegogo. According to the Axanar website:

…totally non-commercial. That means we can never charge for anything featuring their marks or intellectual property and we will never sell the movie, DVD/Blu-ray copies, T-shirts, or anything which uses CBS owned marks or intellectual property.

So… a really good fan film. Click here to see the Hollywood Reporter article along with the full complaint against Axanar.

In my opinion (this a blog, I get to have one of those) this is bunk. Axanar may, or may not, be the best thing in Trek to come about, but it’s probably a damn site better than those shitty “Jar Jar Abrams” films (seriously, how do you get to fuck up both Star Trek and Star Wars in one life time?) that Paramount has released in recent years. I understand the need to protect intellectual property rights, so I sincerely hope that the producers of Axanar can demonstrate that all the money raised for this production will be used for the film, and get to finish its production. Check out the synopsis for Axanar below along with the short film Prelude to Axanar.

New Trek sucks. Let the fan films happen.

Axanar takes place 21 years before the events of “Where no Man Has Gone Before”, the first Kirk episode of the original Star Trek. Axanar is the story of Garth of Izar, the legendary Starfleet captain who is Captain Kirk’s hero. We met Garth in the third season TOS episode Whom Gods Destroy. Kirk called Garth the role model for all future Starfleet Officers. Garth charted more planets than any other Captain and was the hero of the Battle of Axanar, the story of which is required reading at the academy. This is that story.
Axanar tells the story of Garth and his crew during the Four Years War, the war with the Klingon Empire that almost tore the Federation apart. Garth’s victory at Axanar solidified the Federation and allowed it to become the entity we know in Kirk’s time.
It is the year 2245 and the war with the Klingons ends here.

AXANAR!

An Independent Star Trek Film!

Recently I was going through this box of “con swag” that sits next to my desk. It’s a collection of comics, business cards, promo cards, and other stuff collected from the various conventions Chudd and I attended this last year. I keep all this stuff with the intention of “I’ll go through it later.” Well, yesterday was later, and there’s a lot of cool stuff in that box that we’re not posting about. Chief among “the cool stuff” was a promo card for an independent Star Trek film. This last year we’ve seen the Axanar crew at various conventions, and although we’ve picked up several of their cards, I haven’t yet posted about their pretty incredible project. Damn. axnarcast2

Axanar is trying to prove that you don’t need millions of dollars to produce a great science fiction show. Produced by Alex Peters (from Star Trek: Phase II) the story is set some 21 years before the TOS pilot episode, Where No Man Has Gone Before. The show stars former Trek cast members Tony Todd, J.G. Hertzler, Gary Graham, as well as veteran Sci-fi actors Richard Hatch and Kate Vernon. Here’s the basic synopsis for Axanar:

Axanar tells the story of (Captain) Garth and his crew during the Four Years War, the war with the Klingon Empire that almost tore the Federation apart. Garth’s victory at Axanar solidified the Federation and allowed it to become the entity we know in Kirk’s time.
It is the year 2245 and the war with the Klingons ends here.

So far Axanar has run a successful Kickstarter Campaign, raising over $600,000 for the production of the movie. However, they’re still looking for donations and people wanting to help contribute to the shows production can contribute through a IndiGoGo page. As of this posting there is 22 days left on the campaign. I’ve posted a few sample images below along with two promotion videos for the show. For more information about the show click the links above or listen to their Podcast!

Enjoy!
